The City of Peoria is a rapidly growing suburban community located just 15 miles from Phoenix. It was started in the 1880’s as a farming community settled by families from Peoria, Illinois. It remained a quiet rural town until the 1960’s, when its neighbor to the west, Sun City, was developed. From 1980 to 1990, Peoria experienced phenomenal growth with a population increase of approximately 300 percent. The warm climate and small-town atmosphere of Peoria still continues to attract people today. Currently, Peoria covers approximately 178 square miles, and is home to over 155,000 residents. Peoria is Arizona’s 4th largest city in terms of area, and its 9th largest city in terms of population. Today it has grown into the business and medical hub for Phoenix’s Northwest Valley area.
